The Founding of B.R.O.T.H.A.S.

A Legacy of Advocacy and Impact

 

In the summer of 2020, a pivotal gathering of Black male Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs) took place. This meeting, held in the wake of George Floyd's tragic murder on May 25, 2020, was led by Delvin Champagne and marked the beginning of a transformative movement. On or around August 23, 2020, this group convened for the first time, bringing together practitioners including Delvin Champagne, Arley Johnson, Dr. Frederick Covington, Andre Johnson, Dr. Dudley Yacinthe, Stacey Wilson, Sean Gardner, Anthony Hester, and Donald Howard.

 

Delvin Champagne emerged as the group's initial leader, steering early discussions focused on promoting fairness, representation, and opportunity within the occupational therapy profession. Regular meetings quickly followed, and the group began contemplating how to formalize their efforts to ensure a lasting impact. These discussions, while collaborative, were not without their challenges. Comprised of strong-willed "Alpha males," the group navigated differing perspectives through compromise, partnership, and shared commitment to leaving a legacy for future Black male OT and OTA practitioners.

 

About a year into their journey, the group began exploring potential names. After much deliberation and polling, they settled on "Black male registered Occupational Therapists and Assistants," better known as B.R.O.T.H.A.S. Excitement grew as Dr. Frederick Covington designed the group's first emblem: a fisted hand symbolizing strength and unity. Over time, the logo evolved into the iconic black and red circle with “BROTHAS” prominently displayed at its center, once again crafted by Dr. Covington.

 

On July 6, 2021, the group suffered a profound loss with the passing of Arley Johnson, one of its founders. A graduate of Howard University's Occupational Therapy program, Arley was a dedicated husband, father, colleague, and advocate for the profession. His passion and leadership left an indelible mark on the group.

 

Tragedy struck the organization again on April 22, 2024, with the unexpected passing of Anthony Hester. As the first Treasurer of B.R.O.T.H.A.S., Anthony played a pivotal. Known for his quiet strength, his legacy of service, professionalism, and kindness continues to inspire all who had the privilege of working with him. 

 

In 2022, B.R.O.T.H.A.S. formalized its leadership structure, with Donald Howard elected as President, Andre Johnson as Vice President, Anthony Hester as Treasurer, Dr. Dudley Yacinthe Secretary, Dr. Frederick Covington overseeing Events and Social Media, and Sean Gardner coordinating Practitioner and Student Development. This structure enabled the organization amplify its influence and expand its reach within the occupational therapy community.

 

On November 18, 2024, B.R.O.T.H.A.S. took a monumental step by becoming a recognized North Carolina nonprofit corporation, headquartered at 7308 E. Independence Blvd., Suite C, Charlotte, NC. In just a few short years, B.R.O.T.H.A.S. has established itself as a driving force for fairness, mentorship, and professional growth within occupational therapy, ensuring that the voices and contributions of Black male practitioners are both recognized and celebrated.

 

The legacy of B.R.O.T.H.A.S. continues to grow, fueled by a shared vision of creating meaningful change and inspiring the next generation of leaders in occupational therapy.
